J. Lamont got his start in studying music at the young age of 8 years old. He received his formal training attending New York’s famous High School for Performing Arts, made famous in the movie “Fame.” He has been performing ever since.
An accomplished bassist and lead vocalist, J. was recruited and signed by Hank Lane Music in 2000 joining the popular Kenny Ford Band to perform at private party and events throughout the New York metropolitan area. Playing week after week in Kenny’s band was like going to graduate school. Here, J. learned at the side of an experienced band leader the “in’s and out’s” of running a party and what it takes to make a dance floor sizzle. After several years at Kenny’s side, the J. Lamont Band was formed with J. leading his very own “set” Hank Lane band.
Throughout over 20 years’ worth of performing, a few events have stood out. J. recently had a bit part in the movie “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” starring Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner and Michael Douglas. Appropriately, his band can be seen playing in the big finale wedding scene at the end of the film, with J. playing the bass. And of course, it is every musician’s dream to play at Madison Square Garden. J. performed in front of 30,000 people at The Garden backing up several 50’s & 60’s revival acts.
Jay’s musical style is eclectic, and spans many genres from Jazz Standards to Contemporary. However, no matter what music his listeners prefer, it is his goal each and every time his band performs, to get everyone up and dancing. In his words, “If people aren’t dancing, grooving, or just bopping’ to my performances, then I’m doing something wrong.”
